Tony Hewes grew up in Campbell California. As a young man he was always tinkering with something. At 12 years old he built, from scratch, his own motorized go-cart. In his teen years he repaired cars at his parents house using the money to help support the household and to put himself through College. He discovered Drag racing in high school and was the president of the high school drag racing club. “The Campbell High Street Machines Club” He first started building engines at “Tencati Auto Machine” while attending college. After College he moved to southern California to work for a professional NHRA Pro Stock drag race team of Lee Hunter. After Lee stopped racing he worked for Dave Smith and Tom Chelbana on their Pro Stock car. When they stopped racing Tony moved to Reno Nevada to work for the Yuill Brothers on their Pro Stock car. After the Yuill brothers parked their operation Tony decided to try his hand at driving and purchased Steve Steele’s Division and Ford cup winning NHRA Stock eliminator Mustang. Tony had been building the engines and helping with the program during Steve’s championships. Tony drove his car and the Mendes Brothers NHRA Super stock Mustang to many wins. On March 1st 2000 Tony opened “Hewes Performance Machine” and has been building high performance street engines, marine engines, performance imports, and all out racing engines ever since. Hewes Performance Machine has many loyal and successful customers and is proud to help them as they continue to achieve their performance goals.
